Ten reasons why being a chef is actually pretty good


Being a chef is one hell of a gig - but lets shine some light on some of the positive points that come with the job.

1) Hospo people know how to party!

We, along with our FOH buddies work together everyday to ensure that our customers have a great time in our establishment. In other words, we are professionals at knowing how to have a good time. So when it's our turn to let loose.. Well, you know how that goes!

2) You get to sleep in

(sorry breakfast chefs)

3) There's never a dull moment

Lets face it, there's never a dull moment in the kitchen - whether it's a mammoth prep-list that you have to complete or your crazy co-workers playing pranks on you, there's always plenty going on in the kitchen.

4) Free food

'Nuff said

5) Interesting co-workers

I'll leave this one to the man himself Mr Anthony Bourdain to explain - here's a quote from his book 'Kitchen Confidential' - "Just because someone you work with is a miserable, treacherous, self-serving, capricious and corrupt asshole shouldn't prevent you from enjoying their company, working with them or finding them entertaining."

Kitchens these days are slowly becoming filled with chefs who have a more positive outlook than what Mr Bourdain describes but there's no doubt that commercial kitchens somehow attract the most interesting characters.

6) Adrenaline

It's difficult to explain to somebody who hasn't experienced it - the adrenaline rush that you get while smashing out a huge service! I think this is a huge factor as to why so many chefs stay in the game for so long even though they complain every single day. Such a rush!

7) Creative expression

I'm trying not to sound too much like a cooking reality tv show here but you're a chef because you have a passion for food! Being able to do something that you are passionate about everyday really is pretty rad.

8) No crowds on your days off

Your days off probably aren't on weekends, at first this will probably upset you - but when you do finally after 5 years get a weekend off you will be horrified by the swarms of crowds that are EVERYWHERE on weekends. This applies to holidays too, off peak flight prices FTW!

9) Skills

Being a damn good cook is actually an amazing life skill to possess, both at work and on days off!

10) You get to look good
